Staving off the Lice

Head lice prevention is an easier matter than you might realize, and when you know how to prevent head lice you can cut down your chances of suffering through another round of treatments by tremendous amounts. The old saying "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is one that certainly applies to head lice.

First of all, keep in mind that if you've just dealt with a lice infestation then lice prevention should be a major priority for the next couple of weeks. Check daily for signs of lice or eggs to ensure that you've eradicated the problem or the infestation may not be as dead as you think. That tip isn't a bad idea at any time, and checking heads regularly can keep an infestation from becoming a huge ordeal.

Catching lice outbreaks early can make eliminating them much easier to do, so be sure to investigate your family's head from time to time, especially if you have children in school.

The main step you need to take to prevent head lice is simply to avoid close contact with other people. Sitting closely to someone on the bus, giving a hug, or playing sports with someone who has an infestation will spread the lice quickly. That's why it's so hard to prevent head lice in children who are enrolled in school.

Sharing towels, pillows, combs, brushes, hats, blankets, and other items can spread lice as well so try to avoid that also. But simply put, there is no surefire way to completely prevent the problem from occurring.

Lice can survive up to two days without a meal, so be sure that if you're following up an infestation that you clean all bedding, upholstery, and clothing thoroughly or the problem is likely to rise again.

There may not be a guaranteed way to completely avoid head lice, but knowing the basics behind head lice prevention is the best way to lower your risk of the problem. Regular checks, some basic avoidance steps, and a total cleansing in the event of an outbreak are the three golden rules of lice prevention. If you remember them, your chances of lice outbreaks will be far lower.
